October 2018 Newsletter

Goodbye to Summer... Welcome to The New Season!

Hello Parents & Students,

We're so excited to begin this new school year together, and we welcome with it not only a new season of the year, but a new season for our music school, and for all of our students, teachers, and parents!  Lakeland School Of Music has undergone some serious changes over the last two months, with a new name, new location, new logo, new furniture, new instructors, and many newly enrolled students! As good and as necessary as all of these changes have been (just as is true with any substantial change in life), it has also brought about some challenges, and a degree of discomfort at times. For me personally, it's been one of the most challenging seasons of my life, but as I write this newsletter I'm reminded of the imagery of a caterpillar transforming into a butterfly, and how the butterfly is one of the most profound symbols of change and self transformation. As we enter this new season together, let's remember that we ourselves are all butterflies, growing daily in God's beauty and perfection. Let's not be so focused on the destination, with our children and with ourselves, that we miss the joy of living out the journey of each day.

Featured in the Lakelander

Earlier this month LSM was contacted by the Lakelander Magazine and asked to be showcased in their September issue which will be dedicated to local musicians and music based businesses.  The interview was a ton of fun, and my wife and I were both honored to share our story with Lakeland's hippest magazine. We'd like to say a big thank you to everyone who participated in the spontaneous photoshoot a couple weeks ago. Can't wait to see some of our students and teachers showcased in the magazine, which is scheduled to be released sometime during the first or second week of October.  Make sure you get your hands on a copy while they're available!

Open Mic Event

Our next open mic event is scheduled for Oct 27th from 10am - 12pm, at The Covenant Center, 26 Lake Wire Dr. Lakeland FL, 33801.

Sign up sheet will be in the main lobby beginning next week!

Annual Portrait Day

unnamed-3.jpg

LSM Annual Picture Day is scheduled for Nov 10th 10am -12pm, and will be held at our 115 W. Oak Dr. location. Emily from Emily Rose Portraits will be shooting the free event, and both digital and printed copies will be made available for purchase on the day of the shoot!

Please come out, dress to impress, and bring your instrument (unless you play piano or drums, in which case instruments will be provided).

Winter Recital Sunday Dec 16th (Time TBD)

unnamed-4.jpg

Our formal winter recital will be held again this year at Florida Southern College, in the same recital hall as last years spring recital. Christmas songs are encouraged, but as always students can select any song in any style or genre they wish.  If you or your child missed last years event, be sure to sign up!

unnamed-5.jpg

We had such great feedback from last year's participants we've decided to make this venue our new venue for both the Winter recital and the Spring Recital. There's plenty of time to prepare, so we hope to see everyone there! Exact time of the event will be announced soon.

Harrison Arts

LSM is very proud of our 100% success rating for students gaining acceptance into the Harrison Arts music program.

unnamed-7.jpg

We've had the privilege of helping close to a dozen students make the program for classical guitar, jazz band for both guitar and upright bass, piano, voice, and theatre.

If you're child is considering auditioning next year, please notify the front desk at your earliest convenience, and fill out your Harrison Arts audition form today. A teacher recommendation, and minimum of 12 months of lessons prior to auditioning is required to participate in our "Harrison Arts Audition Program". This ensures each student is well prepared for the audition. If there's less than 12 months left before your child's tentative audition, we can still help. Give us a call today to learn more.

LSM March Newsletter - Spring Events and Special Dates

Excitement Is In The Air

Hello LSM Parents and Students,

I hope everyone's having a great first quarter of the new year, and making the very most of your musical journey! We're seeing lots of improvement with all of our students, and hearing great feedback from our teachers, students, and parents, so keep up the good work, and get ready for some great opportunities coming up! We've got some very exciting announcements this month so get your pen and calendar handy cause you definitely don't want to miss out on what's ahead!

Lemon Street Music Jamboree (Saturday April 7th)

We're very excited to announce that Lemon Street Music will be partnering with Explorations V Children's Museum next month, as we help celebrate their 38th Annual Children's Festival on Saturday, April 7th from 10am-2pm. LSM teachers and students will be providing music at one of Lakeland's largest children's events of the year, and we want to see all of you there! There's plenty of time to prepare, so save the date, and reserve your spot by signing the sign-up sheet which will be located at the information table next week!! Please be sure to let your instructor know at your next lesson that you or your child will be performing at the event, so they can help select an appropriate piece of music to be working on in the next coming weeks. Looking forward to seeing everyone perform at this year's special event!

Summer Jam Bands

Back by demand!... We'll be offering our "Summer Jam Band Experience" again this summer starting in June! This is an 8 week music experience where LSM students form bands based on age and experience level, then rehearse together weekly, and perform a live concert at the end of the 8 weeks, to showcase all their hard work. Last year we had 20 students participate, and each of the 3 bands put on an incredible show! We're expecting to triple those numbers this year, and make this our biggest concert yet! Students do not have to be advanced in their skill level to participate, all we recommend is a minimum of one year of music lessons prior to joining. Last year we had students as young as 6 years old participate, and they all had a blast! Playing in a band with their peers may be the single most important thing that your child does to cultivate a passion and enjoyment for learning music, so don't miss this incredible opportunity! There will be registration forms available in the front lobby starting the 2nd week of April, so remember to fill one out and return as soon as possible to reserve your spot! Deadline for turning in registration forms will be May 15th.

Here's what parents from last year's "Jam Band Experience" had to say...

-Sarah Ramsey

“Jam band was a great experience for Luke. It was great seeing all of his lessons and practice pay off in a combined group event with other kids. He will definitely be doing it again this summer!”

-Mike, Karen, Nicole and Anthony Walston

"If you've ever wondered what it's like to experience being in a band, Lemon Street Music’s summer jam band will definitely have you motivated.  My family was able to participate and sit in on Shane’s jam band experience last summer. The whole process was inspiring! We enjoyed watching each performance and hearing it come to life in such a short time. My son, Anthony, loved it and is now learning bass guitar. Shane and his staff are equipped and experienced to teach students in fun and innovative ways. We enjoyed the summer program and will definitely participate in the future!"

-Mollie Simpson

"This past summer my 12-year-old and 10-year-old boys participated in the Lemon Street Music Jam Band program. It was an unforgettable experience! Amazingly, a group of kids, who had never played music together before, successfully learned and performed numerous songs. They enjoyed the process of working together to accomplish a common goal, and not only did they grow as individual musicians, but they also learned how to play as a cohesive unit. The culmination at summer’s end when all the bands played their final pieces was one of the most enjoyable experiences we've had in recent years. Shane did an outstanding job in forming the bands, instructing them during the 8 weeks, and helping them learn and have fun along the way. It was truly a wonderful experience."

-Susan Nalbach

It was a fantastic experience for my two children. We homeschool so anytime they can get together with other children for a learning experience it is great.  Also, it was great for them to see that their solo lessons could be put to use by playing in a small group with others to produce music.  I think it helps them to see this kind of tangible results for their hours of practice. Hope to participate again this summer!

-Brooks Family

“Summer Jam Band took my student’s musicianship to a new level. After years of private lessons and practicing unaccompanied, my student really enjoyed the collaboration of playing with other musicians. While still learning fundamentals in their private lessons, the Jam Bands allowed them to work on songs that the band members suggested themselves, which they enjoyed and infused a variety of musical styles. In the Jam Band sessions, Shane worked with each student on their part individually and with the group as a whole. I know my child really gained an appreciation for the talents required on the other instruments. It was a great experience.

Shane is the perfect teacher for the Jam Bands. Once the band members suggested songs that they wanted to play, he helped to arrange the songs for their abilities, and performed with them. I was impressed at the range of musical styles the bands played. Shane meets your child where they are at, musically and stylistically, to make sure they have a great experience. As a parent, Jam Bands offered my child the opportunity to collaborate musically while still having oversight and direction.”

Here's a short video of the final song we performed at last year's Jam Band concert. It was an impromptu performance of "Seminole Wind" where LSM instructors, members from the 3 participating bands, and some brave parents and siblings all came together for a spontaneous jam session! Hats off to everyone who participated, looking forward to an even bigger event this summer!

How Playing An Instrument Benefits Your Brain

This is an amazing video that demonstrates what happens inside the brain of a musician while playing his/her instrument.  If this isn't reason enough to encourage your child to play a musical instrument, I don't know what is!   When you listen to music, multiple areas of your brain become engaged and active. But when you actually play an instrument, that activity becomes more like a full-body brain workout. What's going on? Anita Collins explains the fireworks that go off in musicians' brains when they play, and examines some of the long-term positive effects of this mental workout.
